Since its commercial debut in 2005, LASEN has flown Airborne LIDAR Pipeline Inspection System (ALPIS) in excess of over 3000,000 miles on natural gas pipelines, compressor stations, refineries, storage facilities, etc. and has detected over 25,000 leaks, generating a savings to our customers in the tens of millions of dollars. Continued improvements and upgrades along with ongoing research and development to allow the system to detect a variety of hydrocarbons and VOCs simultaneously, operate faster, higher and with greater sensitivity, will ensure that LASEN™ remains the leader in aerial leak detection systems.

1989 - LASEN Established

Research on UV and IR Laser begins with plans for a truck-mounted LIDAR begin, in partnership with Phillips.

1990 - First Patent Submitted

Applied for patent for stacked optical parametric oscillator. 9 more patents submitted between 1990 and 1993, final patent approval in June of 1994.

1993 - Field Testing!

The Phillips Petroleum truck mounted unit is successfully field tested to detect hydrocarbon emissions at a rate of 2gms/acre/day.

1994 - Final Patent Received

Internally stimulated optical parametric oscillator/laser patent received.

1989 - Nonlinear Materials Experimentation

Nonlinear materials (KNbO_3, LiNbO_3, and KTA crystals) experimented with for laser based near-IR studies until 1998.

1996 - Optical Engineering Publication

Phillips Petroleum truck mounted unit tests are published in Optical Engineering vol. 35(4)1105-1111.

1999 - OPO Laser Testing Begins

Testing begins on a LiNbO_3 “stacked” OPO Laser Cavity.

1999 - Construction Begins!

Construction begins on an intra-cavity OPO based man portable lidar system.

2000 - Lidar 1 Construction

Optical up-converter with solid state linear array is developed. Construction of Lidar 1 completed. 10 hz, tunable, 3.2 micron mid-IR sensor.

2001 - Landfill Testing

Landfill/dumpsite and facility testing of Methane and other hydrocarbons started. Butanediol, lactic acid and propionic acid successfully detected.

2002 - Lidar 2 Construction

Lidar 2 flight tests start, Lidar 2 successfully detected radiated Anthracis at the aerosol vortex chamber of the U.S. Army Edgewood Chemical and Biological center.

2004 - Lidar 3 Construction

LASEN completes testing of Lidar 3, a fully airborne system, 100Hz, with a sensitivity of 5ppm-m at 25mph at 150 ft above ground level.

2005 - Lidar 4 Construction, Commerical Use Begins

Testing for Lidar 4 completed at 400Hz, 65mph, accuracy improved to 90%. 565 possible leak indications are found on commercial natural gas lines 2005. LASEN and Fugro Airborne work with D.O.E. to find abandoned, uncapped oil wells in the Salt Creek Oilfield in Natrona County, Wyoming.

2006 - Lidar 5 Construction

1,134 possible leak indications found on commercial gas lines in 2006.

2007 - R&D 100 Award

LASEN receives the R&D100 award for being One of the 100 Most Technologically Significant New Products of the Year.

2008 - Lidar 6 Construction

1,468 possible leak indications found on commercial gas lines in 2008.

2009 - Lidar 6 Construction

LASEN participates with the University of Houston and Texas commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) surveying the Houston Harbor for Benzene leaks. LASEN finds 11 possible Benzene leaks and 4 possible Methane leaks. 1370 possible leak indications found on commercial gas lines in 2009.

2010 - Lidar 7 Construction

Construction of Lidar 7, 400Hz to 600Hz, completed. Lidar 7 now capable of changing the hydrocarbon of interest while still flying.

2011 - Lidar 8 Construction

Construction of Lidar 8 is completed with forward facing camera system of 110 degree view.

2012 - First Helicopter

LASEN buys its first Bell 206BIII Jetranger Helicopter and creates OMAC, Organ Mountain Aviation Company LLC. 2796 possible leak indications found on commercial gas lines in 2012.

2013 - Lidar 9 Construction - Patent #10

LASEN applies for patent on a variable-wavelength AOTF lidar system. LASEN buys its second Bell206BIII Jetranger helicopter. Construction of Lidar 9 is completed.

2014 - Lidar 10 Construction

The construction of Lidar 10 to be completed by April 2014, 1000Hz. LASEN starts testing a new detection system for Natural Gas (NG) Liquids in Midland, TX. LASEN completes first international leak detection survey in Canada.

2014 - Added Additional Hydrocarbons and New HD Camera

Developed the ability to detect Propane, Butane and other hydrocarbons with the same detection accuracy as Methane detection. Installed High Definition Camera systems with a larger field of view.

2015 - AOTF

Started work on an AOTF, an optical filter system to improve LIDARS signal to noise ratio.

2015-2016 - Change Detection

Developing a change detection algorithm to detect changes in the environment around the pipeline. Began process to obtain FAA STC Certificate.

2016 - LIDAR ll Construction and FDA Cerfification

Received a FDA Cerfification for eye safety of LaSen's 3.5μm laser. Improved the laser cooling system to improve laser performance and cut down on power load of helicopter. Startd development of LIDAR ll.

2017 - Lidar ll Complete

Adapted the LIDAR to fly on long-range helicopters. Completed construction of LIDAR ll.

Organ Mountain Aviation Company (OMAC), a LASEN company

OMAC was established in January of 2013 to provide aerial support for LASEN's pipeline leak technology and to do so in the safest, most reliable environment possible.  

LASEN's zero-incidence history speaks for itself, and shows how dedicated we are to the integrity and reliability of our Aviation sector.

Our helicopters are maintained in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration Regulations (FAR’s) and Bell Helicopter maintenance instructions by qualified mechanics.

The LASEN Team

Russell Jennett

President

Rusty is the President of LASEN™ and has been involved in developing laser technologies for numerous applications over the last 20 years. He brings the marketing skills to LASEN™ with his understanding of the advantages of the laser technologies. He has managed many contracts with the Department of Defense, Department of Transportation, Air Force and Department of Energy concerning the application of lasers. Since 2003, he has managed the development of laser technology to meet the challenges of the pipeline industry. He quickly recognized the needs of the pipeline industry and how to apply the laser technology in the industry. He is an active board member of the Texas Gas Association and currently serves on the Transportation Committee. He is also is an advisor to the Oklahoma Gas Association board.

Ralph Motto

Director of Technology

Ralph is the Director of Technology at LASEN™ and has more than 30 years of experience in the aerospace and laser industries. He worked on airborne navigation systems in the Air Force; the Space Station, Titan missiles and smart bomb laser guidance systems at Martin Marietta; and the B-1 bomber and Space Shuttle at Rockwell. At LASEN™ over the last 11 years, he has built and developed the inspection systems currently utilized and is developing the next generation of inspection systems. He draws on the research and technical assistance from personnel at New Mexico State University with which LASEN™ has a technology agreement.

David Troutman

Technical Support Lead

David is the Technical Support Lead and has been at LASEN™ since 2003. He served as a Nuclear Reactor Operator on a U.S. Navy submarine, participated in the cleanup of radioactive contamination at various sites for the Department of Energy and was the Lead Quality Assurance inspector for a major semi conductor equipment manufacturer. He has degrees in radiation protection and laser-optics. He conducts system integration and optical alignment, and pre-deployment system tests to ensure the laser inspection systems are performing appropriately.

Michael Shemwell

Field Operations Manager

Michael is the Manager of Field Operations and has been with LASEN™ for more than five years. Initially, he conducted the field inspections and assisted in the development and verification of the inspection systems. Michael now schedules the inspections to meet the customer requirements and manages the field technicians. Daily, he reviews and processes the field data received from the field technicians and validates the inspections results.

Edward, Greg, Joe, Kevin and Joel

Field Techs

Edward Ingram, Joe Nichols, Greg Martin, Kevin Weeks, and Joel Gilbert are the field technicians that work closely with the customers in the field to ensure that customer requirements and last minute details of the inspections are properly handled. The technicians are also responsible for monitoring the system data for integrity and the customer right of way for any hazards and/or encroachments. All of the LASEN™ technicians are Operator Qualified (OQ).
